Playing in the Present

The only moment of time that you have any control over whatsoever, is right now. By the time you read that sentence, that present moment was over, and you were on to the next one. In a sport like baseball or softball, that present moment could be a pitch coming into you while you are hitting or it could be a ground ball hit at you while you are on defense, or any other type of play that might happen in a game. It is very easy to lose focus on the present moment.

Most often, this happens because we are fixated on something that has already happened (the past) or we are thinking about something that may or may not happen (the future). Even if you do not completely lose focus, any thoughts about the past or the future that linger in your mind while a play happens, will take away from your performance in the present.
